Maps & getting there
The NPS brochure map shows primitive roads. Use it with current NPS road reports and a suitable detailed navigation map; an open road on the brochure may be temporarily closed.

KEEP THE GOOD PLACES OPEN
Know the ground rules.
- Stay on established roads; driving off-road is prohibited throughout the park.
- Primitive roads require high clearance and suitable four-wheel drive. Ordinary passenger cars and low-clearance crossovers are unsuitable.
- Black Gap Road is unmaintained and requires four-wheel drive at all times; do not treat it as an introductory route.
- Check the road report and weather before departure. Rain can change passability quickly, and remote recovery is difficult.
- Overnight backcountry stays require the appropriate permit and designated campsite arrangements.
